Home Building XXXIV

Haven't posted in a while since it's been our busy birthday/Christmas/anniversary season (seriously everything)!  After the holiday, we snuck off to St. George to give ourselves a much needed mental break.  This week's focus was building new frames for our bathroom mirrors.  Bought the mirrors used and pretty cheap. My first attempt at 45 degree cuts AND using a biscuit joiner so I think they turned out pretty good.   Still waiting for the mirrors to dry so final pictures later.

In set backs, as soon as we got back, we had some warmer weather.  On my birthday, while relaxing on the couch with a nice warm fire, I heard a really annoying dripping.  Turned out we have a leak from the rooftop.  The fireplace installers came out to look and decided it needed re-sealing.  The next day...more dripping!  Each time I get to climb into the attic and check and move buckets around.  I'm very relieved we haven't completed our fireplace yet since we wouldn't have been able to figure it out quite a quickly.  Speaking of which, we are in the middle of planning the fireplace design...which switched from all rock to part rock with a portion of the wood that can be removed incase of, oh I don't know, a leaking chimney!

Fireplace goals:

Planning on Country Ledgestone Echo Ridge color (Country Ledgestone | Cultured Stone) and wood TBD.  Installing a wood hidden recessed door for the tv power and hdmi cords possibly like below:

Mantle location but still need to figure out if I can use my big, heavy old beam.  Needs trimming and lots of work but will look amazing if it works out.

I accomplished quite a bit on our dog fence and just need to decide on a gate style for the last portion as I do need to walk up and down with lots of wood and like the wider gate option.  Thinking a double gate with a nice big wheel on each side.  Problem is we need more dirt before that can happen!

I also created my address sign since I'm tired of seeing the green construction address.  I plan to do a greenish turquoise inlay in the wood knots and then a solar downcast light above so it is easy to see at night!  I may have been a little excited for this project.  My pinterest feed had a few too many address ideas :)

And I sent out a late Christmas card and just called it our New Year's card...it was my first time not sending a Christmas card on time but, hey, we build a house...

Final projects to get done:
Fireplace rock AND wood
Stair railings
Window Trim
Close this construction loan!

Quick thoughts

So I'm finally up with the times and have my own blog. You'd think if someone was a "webmaster" that they might be current with a full family history...

Now I'm frantically searching my mind for all those clever things my kids did and all those life changing thoughts that would really help all who read my little blog. Nothing.

Just two quick stories about both kids. Maybe then I can feel at ease knowing that my children's lives are adequately documented.

Jake has always been interested in numbers. He loves to ask random people (fellow shoppers at Wal-Mart, those who happen to stop next to us at a red light, etc) what their address is. Finally Jake discovered his life calling when we went through the Wal-Greens drive thru to pick up a prescription. Jake decided he would like to be the teller asking people for their address to verify their getting the correct prescription. We are in the process of getting him a store job application right now.

Afton has profound moments when I realize just how fast she is growing up. This week she saw a little girl walking with just her mom. She pointed at the little girl and said "Ohhh, that little girl doesn't have a brother." Let's just hope she always appreciates that she has a big brother!
