ROUND 1: We started with one architect and one builder and they were great and even tried to get one layout approved by our HOA...only to have them tell us we were reading the HOA documents differently than they were. Our 3400 sq ft home with a walk out basement wasn't big enough because it needed to be atleast 1500 sq ft on the main floor. We still think it could be argued but ultimately decided it wasn't worth the hassle.
ROUND 2: We switched builders and architects and our first draft of our home was absolutely stunning until we realized it was on our lot UPSIDE DOWN. Since we didn't want to drive UP the mountainside to get into our home, we sent him back to the drawing board and he quickly redeemed himself with a lovely next rendition.
ROUND 3: ...which we submitted to our HOA, received approval, had the surveyor come out to mark corners...only to find that the architects numbers were off and our back porch would be in the middle of the road. UGH! Our lot was such an odd curve that even though it was .61 acres, the lot has 3 required setbacks and a unique shape that wouldn't suit anything but something custom. Frustrated, we stuck a sale sign in the yard just to see if it would sell.
FINAL ROUND: Finally after many fails (and looking at thousands of online house plans), we came up with the winner!
